About this service

If Wellington City Libraries does not hold an item, we can place an Interloan request with a library that does.

To find out what items other libraries in New Zealand hold, you can check Te Puna, the National Bibliographic Database hosted by the National Library of New Zealand. To access Te Puna you need to enter your library card number and last name in the Te Puna login screen.

Alternatively, you can search the New Zealand Libraries' Catalogue.

Where there are no holdings of an item in New Zealand libraries, you can use other bibliograhic databases including the Australian National Bibliographic Database and OCLC Wordcat to look for items.

Who: Anyone with a current library card

What:

Books, articles, theses, music scores, audio-visual material and car manuals

How:

By filling out the online Interloan request form or filling out a Interloan request form at Central or a branch library.

Cost:

  • Standard New Zealand interloans: $14 (Please note that this charge applies whether or not the interloan is successful)
  • Urgent New Zealand Interloans: $30
  • Interloans from Australia: from $20
  • Other International Interloans: between $25 - $100 (a quote will be provided for the specific item)

Arrival time for a standard interloan: Depends on the availability of the item at holding libraries. It's advisable to plan ahead when requesting material, as there could be a delay e.g. where the item is already on loan.

Lending period: This depends on the library it is borrowed from (usually about three weeks)
Renewals: The Interloans team can put in in a request for a renewal if you require further time. If approved by the lending library, the renewal is free of charge.

Urgent Interloan: If you have an urgent Interloan request, please contact Wellington City Libraries' Interloans team at interloans@wcc.govt.nz, or phone 801 4057. Delivery is guaranteed within one to three days.

Notification: Central Library - The Interloans team will contact you by email or telephone to let you know that the interloan has arrived, if you indicated your pickup branch as Central

Branch libraries - Branch library staff will contact you by email or telephone to let you know that the interloan has arrived.

Collection: Central - Collect at the Issues desk on the Ground Floor

Branch - Collect at the desk of the branch library.

Articles - These can be emailed as an electronic copy (in accordance with copyright conditions) or collected as a printed copy from either Central or a branch library.
