New E.P: Hault

‘New EP’ is where a band or artist answers some questions about their latest release. Up next is Hault, whose new E.P ‘Brother’ was released in late February.

When/where was the new EP recorded?
We once again had the pleasure of recording at Blue Barn Studios in Wellington with james Goldsmith on the desk.

Who produced/engineered the EP? How did the tracks come together in the studio, or at home?
See above.

Did the shorter format of an EP give you the option to experiment in any way with your sound or with different forms of song-writing?
I would not say that. These days music is a singles game, like it was back in the day of 45’s. An EP is really a collection of singles so it was really a way to put out a new compilation of singles.

Was there any specific gear you used to capture that?
We did do a lot of different things on this EP. The gear had a bit to do with it mainly with different guitar amp and effects as well as a diferent approach to miking up the drums. The bass was probably the biggest difference as we ran it through two different rigs – an Ampeg amp for the tops and mids and a Mesa for the lows. We also used an 8 string bass tuned in 5ths on ‘Hesitate’. The title track ‘Brother’ features a 12 string bass.

Is there a particular track or theme that the EP was formed around?
Not really. It would be fair to say we took a more aggressive approach song writing wise on this one compared to the first EP.

Where do you see the EPs place in growing an audience online? Do you see it as a progression towards an album or a separate entity?
Separate entity. What you put out and how is only a small part of creating an online presence. Fact is the net is a visual medium before it is audio so photos, videos and artwork are actually more crucial to getting attention then the music, it seems.

Which digital platforms is it available on?
Bandcamp, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon….all the usual places and more!

Are you doing any gigs or promotion for its release?
We have been planning to do a bit of a showcase with other bands we like to play with and a few guest artists as well. To be honest though we have struggled to find a venue for the show. Most places in Wellington these days seem to be reluctant to book anything that can not guarantee a certain size crowd and thus a decent amount of takings on a Friday / Saturday night. We will keep trying though!
