New Album: Malignancy (NZ)

‘New Album’ is where a band or artist answers some questions about their latest release. Up next is Tom from Malignancy-NZ.

When/where was the new album recorded?

The album was recorded between 2018-2019 and was recorded in my house in Newtown.

Who produced/engineered the album? How did the tracks come together in the studio, or at home?
I recorded all the parts in my bedroom studio. I then enlisted Sam (Vocalist) to come down to record the vocals. It was handed over to Harry Benson-Rea who mixed and mastered the whole album.

How did the songwriting happen? Are there any overall themes within the songs/album?
Usually what happens is I’ll demo a few tracks and then send them to Sam who begins writing lyrics for new songs as they appear. Once the lyrics are finalised we record. The overall themes for this album are about a fictional character who is selected to become a new Horseman of the Apocalypse. The album tells the story of his destiny being manifested and his final form being developed.

Were you going for a different sound/approach on this album?
Yeah, the last E.P had a much more home made raw sound to it. With this release I wanted a bit more polish and also to explore more post metal aspects through the music. I also used samples this time around to create more of a soundscape.

Was there any specific gear you used to capture that?
I used a new guitar on this album with way higher output pickups. I felt this created a much more crushing massive tone . Gear was pretty metal standard, 5150’s and the like. The vocals I used two separate mics to capture a dual stereo track which gave it a much thicker tone.

Is there a particular single/track that you feel captures the essence of the album?
I think ‘Forge’ or ‘Headless’ captures the slow moving epic pace of the music that I tend to write while then developing into faster more heavier passages. They also show off the guitar layering that I use that adds more to the overall wall of sound that I use as well as harmonization.

Is there a physical copy available? If not which digital platforms is it available on?
Yes, physical copies are available on our Bandcamp. It will also be available on Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music, iTunes, Tidal and smaller other digital platforms.

Are you working on a video/videos for any of the songs? Are you doing any gigs or promotion for its release?
A video for one of the tracks is being written. We are playing a release show on Friday 29th of March with Fall of Man, WitchBlade and Planet Hunter at Valhalla. $10.00
