The Eighth Note: Khailana Kendrick Music

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is Khailana Kendrick Music, who are actually a duo consisting of Khailana & Michael Sutherland, who have just released their debut E.P.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
We are a Wellington based duo who independently write, record and produce psychedelic fantasy inspired music.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
We’ve just released a 4 song EP called Twisted Roots, and are working on taking what we’ve done another step further with an even more ambitious full length album.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Spotify, Bandcamp and iTunes.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Khailana: Push the Sky Away (Nick Cave), Rumours (Fleetwood Mac), All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend (Aurora)
Michael: Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd), Axis Bold as Love (Jimi Hendrix), Led Zeppelin IV (Led Zeppelin)

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Heaps of our friends are amazing musicians but if we’d have to narrow it down we’d say The Nudge, Trinity Roots and Model Motel.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
Our favourite so far was playing on a boat in Wellington harbour.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
We often help each other with pre-written songs but sometimes we like to go into the studio without a plan and tame wild ideas from the ether, often wine is involved. We love using unorthodox recording techniques, found sounds and trying something new every time we’re in the studio.

Where/when is your next gig?
We’ve been recording as a duo but are setting up a small line-up to play some shows out of town to spread the word!
