New E.P: Ghost Who Walks

‘New EP’ is where a band or artist answers some questions about their latest release. Up next is Sam from Ghost Who Walks, whose debut E.P is releasing this Friday.

When/where was the new EP recorded?
We recorded it in November of last year at Surgery studios, Wellington.

Who produced/engineered the EP? How did the tracks come together in the studio, or at home?
It was produced by myself engineered by the Dr Lee Prebble and mastered by Mike Gibson. For the most part I had finalised the arrangements at home before we hit the studio, with the exception of ‘Walking Talking Blues’ the song morphed into something else in the studio which was really cool.

Did the shorter format of an EP give you the option to experiment in any way with your sound or with different forms of song-writing?
The four songs we chose to record had only ever existed in a live setting. So it was very much an opportunity to experiment with what was sonically possible with these songs and really giving us a chance to capture the essence of Ghost Who Walks.

Was there any specific gear you used to capture that?
Lee came into the live room when I had started my guitar overdubs holding an original Russian big muff, needless to say my Boss fuzz pedal was cast aside and the big muff became a big part of the sound of the record. In terms of microphones, Lee has a beautiful mic collection. From memory we used a Shure sm7b for the vocals which were tracked live and I feel like there was a Royer R-121 on the guitar cab, to name a few.

Is there a particular track or theme that the EP was formed around?
The theme for the EP gravitates towards the feeling of loneliness its something we all experience one way or another, even if it’s just in our heads. This is certainly true for the first 3 tracks, the final track ‘Soul Power’ is a parting gift of sorts leaving you with a message of hope.

Where do you see the EPs place in growing an audience online? Do you see it as a progression towards an album or a separate entity?
I feel this record is a way of establishing ourselves online for sure. It gives people the chance to hear who we are and what we’re about. It would be a natural progression to head towards creating an album, but we’ll see what the future holds when the time comes.

Which digital platforms is it available on?
The EP will be available for streaming everywhere September 21st including on Spotify, Bandcamp and Apple Music.

Are you doing any gigs or promotion for its release?
We are having our release party on Thursday the 20th of September at Valhalla. With support from the very groovy Dr Reknaw and DJ Gmajor on the decks. Tickets available From Under the Radar.
