New E.P: Josie Moon

‘New EP’ is where a band or artist answers some questions about their latest release. Up next is Josie Moon, who has just released a fantastic new EP called ‘Rose Tinted’.

When/where was the new EP recorded?
We wrote and recorded almost all of our EP at Rubber Monkey in Wellington. They were super generous and helpful with accommodating us over the summer we wrote it.

Who produced/engineered the EP? How did the tracks come together in the studio, or at home?
Nik Brinkman and I co-produced the EP together and wrote 4 of the 5 songs together in the studio. The 5th song which is in interlude was something that I put together at home and then Nik mixed. Nik engineered this EP.

Did the shorter format of an EP give you the option to experiment in any way with your sound or with different forms of song-writing?
The format of an EP is really awesome to explore small areas of genres and music ideas in a brief visit. I wanted to explore a blatantly pop direction this time around and the format of an EP accommodates really well for that type of thing.

Was there any specific gear you used to capture that?
We tried to use more analogue equipment while composing. There was a Prophet lying around in the studio as well as a few other synths that we experimented with Nik and I are both quite tired of MIDI. We were really lucky to snag a Sony C800G to record most of my vocals on. It’s a really beautiful mic, unfortunately we had to let it go towards the end of the EP because Ed Sheehan needed it to record on up in Auckland and there’s only one of those mics in the country hahaha.

Is there a particular track or theme that the EP was formed around?
The EP all fits into this idea of viewing your surroundings through a rose tinted lens. The track-list kind of follows the romanticisation of others and how that can negatively effect ourselves, then goes through a transition towards reclaiming yourself at the end. The idea of rose tinted also plays with the fact that I have synesthesia and many of the songs on this EP are shades of pink and red.

Where do you see the EPs place in growing an audience online? Do you see it as a progression towards an album or a separate entity?
I think at this stage I’m still exploring my sound and how I want to express myself so for now I don’t think I’m quite ready for a full album. This EP is definitely its own body of work, although I think 97 (Hurt) kind of hints towards a shift in lyrical focus which I want to cover more expansively in the future.

Which digital platforms is it available on?
It’s up on all digital streaming platforms including Apple Music, iTunes and Spotify!

Are you doing any gigs or promotion for its release?
I played at the Other’s Way Festival on Friday, the day of its release! I also have some other shows coming up that are yet to be announced, but I’m very excited about.
