New Album: Raw Collective

‘New Album’ is where a band or artist answers some questions about their latest release. Up next is Rory from Raw Collective, who have just released their full-length debut album ‘For The Ancients’.

When/where was the new album recorded?
In Wellington, in our home studio. With a trusted vocal booth, and our combined equipment, we recorded the album, one track at a time, over months.

Who produced/engineered the album? How did the tracks come together in the studio, or at home?
The album was mixed by Jason Erskine, and Mastered by Mike Gibson. We got the best we could find in town to the engineering, it paid off.

How did the songwriting happen? Are there any overall themes within the songs/album?
Myself (Raw Deezy) produce the tracks, co written with Pauly Lowe, then the band record/write their parts. The theme of the album is ancient megaliths, the cosmos and psychology, our three favourite topics!

Were you going for a different sound/approach on this album?
This album is just the cream of the crop, from all the demos and different songs we’ve performed over the years. We wanted to bring all the different genres from all the members into the mix, so that was the approach, but keeping the hip-hop skeleton.

Was there any specific gear you used to capture that?
Nothing specific, however, mixing the live drum kit with sampled hip-hop kicks and snares, gave us a mix of live band with beats we wanted.

Is there a particular single/track that you feel captures the essence of the album?
‘Pictures’. This is our next single, I love it because it’s a sound we’ve created by mashing up all our favourite bits from different genres, we’ve invented our own style of hip-hop with this one.

Is there a physical copy available? If not which digital platforms is it available on?
Records are arriving in a few weeks, otherwise its a digital release. It will be available on every digital platform on May 14th!

Are you working on a video/videos for any of the songs? Are you doing any gigs or promotion for its release?
Yes, we just released a video single “Waterproof Coat’ and plan on releasing two more. We want to take this album all over NZ, starting with live shows Wellington May 25th and Auckland June 29th, more dates to be released.
