The Eighth Note: Mus-ic

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is Musonda, a Zambian now living in Wellington who makes music under the moniker Mus-ic.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
My Name is Musonda, and I am of Zambian origin and a recent graduate from the Victoria University. I like to make/produce various music and not stick to one type of rhythm or style, but I make my music more for an educational purpose (apart from trying to entertain); in the sense that I want people who listen to my music to learn something new and hopefully be inspired to make a real difference especially for the next generation.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
Lately I am working on music that I can finally put on paid platforms such as iTunes, Spotify and other similar platforms/outlets. I have been working on doing this for a number of years and this year I feel that I am ready to follow through with that plan. Also I have been working on a Mixtape/EP called “Honestly, I have…”, in which I try to talk about my fears, try to inform the listener, entertain the listener, and ultimately, I try to illustrate to the listener – through my diverse rap styles- that such a thing as conscious rap does exist.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
I’d say the best place for people to find and follow my music would be through my Facebook page, Soundcloud, and or my ReverbNation page.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Dance with My Father – Luther Vandross.
Emotion – Papa Wemba.
All Eyez on Me – Tupac Shakur.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
A friend of mine known as TAMA would be the other Wellington based artist I would like to continue to work with, as I have already worked with him on my Mixtape and earlier projects.
Also I am not that knowledgeable of the Wellington music scene, thus I am not aware of many artists based here thus I have made it one of my goals to investigate further.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
As I have not yet performed any shows I wouldn’t have one, but one of my goals is to maybe one day perform at Westpac Stadium- even though a big dream I am determined to one day achieve this dream.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
I don’t really have a set way of composing my songs as it varies. Though most of the time I usually start writing lyrics first, which inturn reflect the mood I am in, and then try and fit them to a track or backing track and edit the song as I go, and usually the songs I really like I usually finish in a day or two but if I find myself really struggling to finish a song that may mean I may not finish it and then would usually discard that project.

Where/when is your next gig?
At the moment I am in the process of going around Wellington and seeing where I can perform and thus put my name out there, thus for now I have none lined up.
