The Eighth Note: Solo Ono

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is Frank Eggleton (Tidal Rave, Echo Beach, Kittentank) who is part of duo Solo Ono along with Jordan Stewart (Pleasant Surprise), who have just released their first new music in 6 years.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
Solo Ono is Frank Eggleton (Me) on guitar, vox and Deluge.. and Jordan Stewart on drums.. After having recorded extra layers, hopefully Gabor Hellyer is going to join us on bass.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
We have just released an EP called ‘Rogue Planet EP.’ It’s all on our Bandcamp pg.. It was recorded with Warwick Donald and mastered by Steven John Marr. Scott Hakkaart designed the cover art for us.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Bandcamp & Facebook.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
I’d say, the most influential albums to me – didn’t happen to me when I was growing up. The most influential release to me just before I started playing music was:
Yeah Yeah Yeahs EP sometimes called ‘Master,’ as it has Karen O wearing a Master necklace. It’s so raw, it nearly sounded sixties to me. The guitar is restrained and in your face at the same time.. How’d they do that? It is the perfect EP
The Breeders – Last Splash. Anything with Kim Deal in it, really.. I mean come on, she can do no wrong.. The sound of the guitars so so good. Cannonball, Driving on 9 and the opening track; New Year.. ah amazing.
Just three? Oh man.. It’s out of PJ Harvey and Le Tigre…
Le Tigre – Le Tigre … Kathleen Hanna’s style and voice and everything!

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Being in two bands, I already get to work with lots of great musicians.. So excluding them… Cortina would be fun… Disasteradio, lots and lots..

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
Any venue with a fun audience.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
I would usually take in a song…But I think we’ll make it a more jammy for the next few months.

Where/when is your next gig?
We don’t have anything lined up.. Hit us up!!
