New Album: WOMB

‘New Album’ is where a band or artist answers some questions about their latest release. Up next are WOMB you have just released their full-length debut album ‘Like Splitting the Head From the Body’.

When/where was the new album recorded?
We recorded the songs live with Rohan Evans at Wine Cellar in Auckland in February last year. Then we spent many months self-recording at home, layer on layer of synth, piano, strings, and vocals.

Who produced/engineered the album? How did the tracks come together in the studio, or at home?
We were lucky to merge studio recording and DYI recording: performing the bases of the tracks in a studio environment, to capture the songs with the energy that comes with playing them live, as well as experimenting and making mistakes and taking our time with the songs by then working on them in bedrooms and lounges. Charlotte did the first mixes of the tracks, and then we had our long time friend Thomas Lambert finish mixing and mastering.

How did the songwriting happen? Are there any overall themes within the songs/album?
The songs were created across a year or so, and were written as reflections on different moments from that time. Though there was no explicit “theme” when making this album – the songs are all independent of each other – certain recurring ideas do emerge if you look at the works as a whole. Themes of relationality – being who you are through your connections with those that matter to you, a desire for closeness, closeness as meaning.

Were you going for a different sound/approach on this album?
There was no conscious approach to making a “sound” and it is important for us that we don’t fall into a singular sound…

Was there any specific gear you used to capture that?
Nope. We’re not really too focussed on gear… we mostly use what’s around us and go from there.

Is there a particular single/track that you feel captures the essence of the album?
There’s no real “essence” to the album… just as there’s no intended “theme” to the album, but if we were to choose, it would probably be “Here We Bend (to Smell the Dirt)”.

Is there a physical copy available? If not which digital platforms is it available on?
Yes! We are very stoked to have tapes and vinyls, which Rohan Evans set up! Everything will be up on Bandcamp, as well as Soundcloud, Spotify, iTunes, etc.

Are you working on a video/videos for any of the songs?
To be announced soon!
