The Eighth Note: Ultranauts

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is Malcolm, the guitarist for Ultranauts.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
I’m Malcolm, and I’m the guitarist for Ultranauts. Stoner rock is probably the genre we fit into. We have a science fiction theme going on, so lots of our songs have references to space. The idea for the band is that is we’re playing the soundtrack for a bunch of stoner space truckers ambling around the galaxy. Kind of Cheech & Chong meets Red Dwarf.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
I’m glad you asked. We have just put out our first album, ‘Out of the Void’.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
The album is available on Spotify, iTunes, Bandcamp and Amazon. You can find links to all of those plus some other bits and pieces on our Website.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
I’m going to say Black Sabbath – Master of Reality, the first Danzig album, and Beastie Boys – Paul’s Boutique.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
We’d love to play support for Beastwars if and when they come back. We also love playing with our good friends Hault.

What ’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
San Fran would be my favourite, though Valhalla has a special kind of charm. And odour.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band ’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
For most of our songs I string together a bunch of guitar riffs, record a demo on my laptop and then get Gerome to come up with some lyrics and vocal melodies. Then we nuzzle it into shape as a band. That’s worked quite well for us.

Where/when is your next gig?
To be confirmed at this point!
