The Eighth Note: Ghost Who Walks

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is Sam from Ghost Who Walks.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
Just another cat who digs the tunes trying to find his way in this world haha.
My music is very much a blend of all that inspires me, things that groove and move me, borrowing flavours from funk, rock, blues and a dash of reggae coming together as a mix of soulful vocals, steady grooves and soaring melodies.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
I have just been polishing my first batch of original songs, getting them ready for the studio in November – but there are always new songs on the go.

From ‘Battle of the Bands @ Bodega, 2016

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Jimi Hendrix – Band Of Gypsies
I think every Jimi record has influenced me heavily but this one stands out for Jimi’s incendiary guitar parts and out of this world performance that never gets old.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers – Blood Sugar Sex Magik
This was a big one for me. John Frusciante’s guitar parts gave me a greater understanding of funk guitar.
Bob Marley and the Wailers – Catch a Fire
That hard hitting roots reggae and the lyrical genius of Bob Marley and peter Tosh. In particular Bobs vocals were a big influence on my singing early on.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Aaron TokonaA Hori Buzz

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
Bodega – cutting my teeth into Battle of the Bands last year was a bit learning curve for me.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
Sometimes the words come first and the music later but generally just jamming, mucking around on the guitar finding stuff that I really dig and using that as a basis for a song.

Where/when is your next gig?
Southern Cross Saturday 22nd July
Caroline Saturday 19th August
