NZMM: Favourite Wellington Music Moment – Nikita Tu-Bryant

Last year for NZ Music Month 2016, we asked bands/artists for a favourite memory of making music in Wellington.

It could involve a favourite gig, a funny story from the recording studio, a moment that led to the inspiration for a song, the fond recollection of a defunct venue, or the piece of music or lyric that they were most proud of creating.

We really enjoyed the stories people told us, so we are doing it again this year. Up next is the Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant who records under her own name as well as Nikita & the Spooky & FLITE.

Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant aka Nikita & the Spooky aka FLITE has a few pretty outrageous embarrassments from her time onstage. But one that will never be forgotten would be her debut release with her folk band Nikita & The Spooky at Matterhorn. There was a pleasantly surprisingly long wait out the door, listeners had gathered cross-legged on the floor in front of the band, and thy were feeling the pressure. Unfortunately their bass player Daniel Yeabsley who had had too little to eat or drink earlier that day, having come from playing other shows; passed out onstage during their first song. The ambulance was called and a very concerned Nikita did not know what to do. Friend and supporter Gareth Farr fabulously encouraged her “the show must go on Nikita! People are here to listen!”. After the ambulance had taken Mr Yeabsley away the band continued their show – bass-less, without the bottom end. Spooky shows in the months that followed would often begin with “Dan have you eaten today?”.
