NZMM: Favourite Wellington Music Moment – Skymning

Last year for NZ Music Month 2016, we asked bands/artists for a favourite memory of making music in Wellington.

It could involve a favourite gig, a funny story from the recording studio, a moment that led to the inspiration for a song, the fond recollection of a defunct venue, or the piece of music or lyric that they were most proud of creating.

We really enjoyed the stories people told us, so we are doing it again this year. Up next is bedroom pop artist Skymning. Though he is now based in London, he took the time to share some memories of the Wellington music scene, with a really cool shout out to fellow musicians Mermaidens, Lontalius, & prizegiving.

My favourite recent memories of the New Zealand (and more specifically the Wellington) music community all involve debut album release shows in 2016. Seeing a band like Mermaidens develop from their first show at a house party in Kelburn, and go on to pack out San Fran with a crowd ranging from teens to middle aged people. Seeing Eddie Johnston and the Lontalius project grow from Eddie playing alone with his Casios to their first band performance in 2012 at Fred’s, to selling out Prefab for his debut album release – again with a super diverse age range in the audience. And seeing Prizegiving go from opening for bands like Carb on Carb and go on to have people singing along in the crowd a week later at their album release at Moon. I just feel super fortunate to have seen all of these artists and their fan bases grow, and to have been a part of the independent music scene in Wellington.
