The Eighth Note: EDIE

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is Anna from EDIE.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
We’re Edie (Anna Edgington vox & Thomas Friggens drums). Always hard to describe your own music, ’cause you’re too close to it and deep down the rabbit hole. But some words that come to mind are: weird, rich, glitchy, bass heavy, full of vocals, hypnotic, weird, wonderful.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
Yup, a bunch of stuff. Thomas Friggens, mind blowing drummer has come on board in the last 6 months and brings a whole new dimension & breath to the sound. So, we haven’t released for a while, as we’ve been working on our live set. However, we’re finishing a few tracks, which is a relief, as they’ve been marinating around for a bit too long and everyone is having a go at me for it – keep your ears peeled in the next month.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Facebook will give you a good idea of where and who we’re playing with. You can download the old EP via Bandcamp for free.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Arg, do I have to boil it down to 3?
Amnesiac – Radiohead
Portishead – Dummy
Aphex Twin – drukQs

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
There are so many..but right now, I would like to work with mHz – Mo H Zareei

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
San Fran for Bernie and Bass & Rogue & Vagabond for love of musicians and good shit.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
It’s different for each track…What is common though, is making sure we/I have free access to pen paper/piano/microphone and computer…Thomas and I have begun writing together, which has been really exciting. He sends through beat/percussion, I’ll send back some harmonic/melodic ideas and we will build on that and magic is made, or vice versa. It has been a way of generating material and enthusiasm really quickly – there’s less self-criticism in the mix, which means more creativity.

Where/when is your next gig?
San Fran! Friday 21st April. SoccerPractise are coming down from Auckland – they are incredible. Jet Jaguar will be joining us PLUS a secret guest who will blow your mind…
