The Eighth Note: Hex

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is Liz from Hex.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
We are three friends, but also Greta and Kirsten are married to each other. Our music is a weird mix of heavy guitars and drums with intertwining vocals and harmonies. We write songs about the power of nature and the horror of humans.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
We just released our second single from our upcoming album. The song is called Page of Pentacles and the album will be ‘Past, Present, Future’. We’re into tarot too.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
http://thebesthex.com/

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
For me (Liz Mathews, drummer) I would say:
Patti Smith – Horses
Sleater-Kinney – Dig Me Out
The Need – The Need

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
We are in the beginning stages of writing a rock opera with The All Seeing Hand. I also love Earth Tongue and I Drink Your Blood.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
Valhalla. Every time.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
First comes a riff, then we jam on it, go away, come back, Greta and Kiki sing together in the car and write lyrics at home and bring it back. Other times a song is laid before me and I just drum. It’s all the best.

Where/when is your next gig?
Psych fest in Auckland, then 10 dates in Australia!
