The Eighth Note: Equilibrium Trio

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is vocal group Equilibrium Trio.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
Three voices (Sarah, Lily, and Helena) , one guitar, and a lot of harmonies! We’re kind of somewhere in between folk, pop and acoustic/alternative music.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
We’ve got a 5 song EP titled ‘Constellations’ coming out very very soon. It’s all original music so we’ve been working super hard on writing songs. With Cuba Dupa coming up soon (25th of March) we’ve continued to write new material and actually have written 3 new songs since recording our EP all of which will be performed at Cuba Dupa.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
We post updates for everything on our Facebook page so it’s probably the easiest way to get every bit of info.

‘Constellations’ due 25th March

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Sarah:
Lungs – Florence + The Machine
Sigh No More – Mumford and Sons
Helplessness Blues – Fleet Foxes
Helena:
+ – Ed Sheeran
Soundtrack to the movie Once
Six Strings and a Sailboat – Jamie McDell
Lily:
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – The Beatles
Rumours – Fleetwood Mac
Inside In/Inside Out – The Kooks

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Thomas Oliver, Louis Baker, or Drax Project. All three are amazing artists that the three of us really love.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
Zeal is an awesome venue to play in! They’ve done such an awesome job of promoting young musicians who might not otherwise have a chance to play gigs. The crew there are all super lovely and friendly which creates a really nice vibe. We’re super gutted that they currently don’t have a permanent venue as their building had irreparable earthquake damage.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
We always start with lyrics which are written by one of the three of us. After discussing a general idea of what direction we want the song to take, Helena and Sarah usually bounce ideas around for a guitar part/basic chord structure. Lily is usually the one who takes charge with the melody and comes up with the initial something to go over the top of our guitar part. Together we refine the initial melodic idea until we’re all happy with it and then add some (often kind of weird/unexpected) harmonies where desired and then we have a song!http://zeal.nz/

Where/when is your next gig?
Cuba Dupa, on the 25th of March, we’ll be playing at the Zeal stage sometime between 5 and 11pm on Saturday.
