The Eighth Note: Peyton Morete

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is Peyton Morete, a young singer songwriter who is performing at CubaDupa on the Zeal stage.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
I’m Peyton Morete and I’m a 14 year old singer-song writer from the Kapiti Coast. I have been performing regularly over the last four years in the Wellington region at venues and music festivals. I’ve won Smokefree RockQuest Manawatu solo category for the last two years running. I also won the Wellington Super Star Talent Quest 2016. I perform mainly my own music so don’t really know what to call my style so I normally go with Indie Rock.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
I released my first EP at age 12 called Innocent. My music is constantly evolving but usually I get inspiration from issues facing youth today. My latest song Outcast is about not conforming to what society expects from you, that it is ok to be different. I am also busy trying different styles of songs that I normally play with my guitar.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
People can find me on Facebook, Youtube and Instagram. Just search up Peyton Morete on Youtube or peytonmoretemusic on Instagram or Facebook.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
I wasn’t really into anyone’s albums but I was really into the artists Katy Perry and Lorde. I was exposed a lot to my parents musical tastes so I love listening songs from the 70s and 80s. I love the old Disco tracks.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
I’m not sure who I would want to work with. I think just getting out there and being exposed to lots of styles and sounds is great experience. I performed at a Hip Hop Showcase in December which was totally different to my normal gigs.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
I’ve enjoyed the gigs I have played in Wellington like The Grand, Paramount Theatre, Little Theatre but I’m really looking forward to playing in Cuba Street. I love when I am in a big venue or large outdoor event. I have a big voice so love to really belt out my songs.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
I normally am just in a mood to write a song and I would play around with some chords and lyrics and if it sounded nice or I liked it, I would write it down. Some songs only take me 10 minutes to write. I love to create a great hook when writing a song and then work from there. As I said earlier I like to write about things that are happening to my friends and people my own age like cyberbullying, low self-esteem, friendship dramas etc.

Where/when is your next gig?
After Cuba Dupa where I am performing on the Zeal stage, my next big event is Smokefree RockQuest. This is my 5th year entering it.
