The Eighth Note: AayKay

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest’s are Hip-Hop/R&B sister group AayKay.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
We are sisters born and raised in Wellington. We’ve always had a strong passion for singing, rapping and everything to do with Hip-Hop and R&B music.
We started writing and recording our own music together about a year ago and formed AayKay.
Since then we have been working on mixtapes and performing at a number of events around the city gaining experience as we go. With some big goals set, we have our vision in place and are excited to see what the future has in store for us.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
Our mixtape F.O.E (Family Over Everything) will be released 27th of March – we are so excited! We have also dropped the single from our up and coming mixtape called ‘Been there, done that’ available now for free download here.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Facebook
SoundCloud
YouTube

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Hardest question ever, trying to narrow it down to only three! But we’d have to say all albums by Missy Elliott, TLC and Aaliyah.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Aaradhna
Ladi6
Tomorrow People

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
We’ve enjoyed performing at Moon Bar and The Grand in Wellington so far.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
It’s different every time. Sometimes one of us will have a beat we like or the beginning of a song maybe the lyrics or a melody, then if we are both feeling it we start piecing the song together. We work together on all aspects of our music but the actual creative process varies.

Where/when is your next gig?
March 18th at Moon Bar in Newtown, Wellington. This is going to be an awesome night, come check us out!
