The Eighth Note: prizegiving

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is Miles from prizegiving.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
Friend band/ songs from Wellington.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
We’ve a good bunch of new songs that we really want to record. The wheels are in motion. Hopefully not too late in the year!

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Facebook.com/prizegivingxo
Prizegiving.bandcamp.com

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
I was almost going to leave this question but I want to respect the 8th Note format!
EP (Tied on Teeth)
This EP probably isn’t the best reflection of Tied On Teeth at their creative peak but it’s their definitive release (bar singles and the posthumous mediafire assortment ‘Farewell’). For me it represents the first local band I met who were making music which I thought was important and performing it in a meaningful way. The best song recorded during the EP session, ‘Bright Eyes’, was not included on the EP but can be found in the aforementioned ‘Farewell’ release and it is beautiful. Members of Tied on Teeth have gone on to play in Career Girls, Caroles, Bedpeace, Cheats, The Pleasure, Alec and Lapis to name a few. Ngatea’s finest.
Late Registration (Kanye West)
Romance Is Boring (Los Campesinos!)
Bitter, funny, emotionally overwrought.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Girlboss, Womb and Flo Wilson.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
We really like playing AA venues but this year Caroline have been treating us really well!

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
I think a lot about it but there’s no formula. Something will be brought to the group, it might just be a nice chord, then we’ll work on it until it’s a thing. I think we enjoy the learning process – we’re always trying to get better.

Where/when is your next gig?
Frankie Cosmos on 10 March
Sad by Sad West Festival Wellington – April 21-23
More coming soon but they’re secrets rn!”
