NZMM: Favourite Wellington Music Moment – Lauren King

For New Zealand Month last year we asked a bunch of people what they thought made Wellington music unique as well as what their favourite albums by Wellington artists were.

This year we thought we would do something similar, but slightly different. This time we’re asking people for a favourite memory of making music in Wellington. It could involve a favourite gig, a funny story from the recording studio, a moment that led to the inspiration for a song, the fond recollection of a defunct venue, or the piece of music or lyric that they are most proud of creating.

Today we caught up with Lauren King, a composer based in Wellington. She has composed music for over thirty visual media projects, including short films, documentaries and video games, and has worked with a variety of directors and production companies in New Zealand, Australia, US and the UK. Her first solo album ‘Inscape’ was released in 2015.

A favourite Wellington music moment for me would be the experience of creating my first album as a composer in 2014. It was a laborious and lengthy process but by far one of the most rewarding projects I’ve undertaken! I was also very fortunate to have Wellington composer Rhian Sheehan help me with some of the recording, production and mixing aspects of album, which made the whole process incredibly inspiring and memorable.
