NZMM: Favourite Wellington Music Moment – Coco Favre

For New Zealand Month last year we asked a bunch of people what they thought made Wellington music unique as well as what their favourite albums by Wellington artists were.

This year we thought we would do something similar, but slightly different. This time we’re asking people for a favourite memory of making music in Wellington. It could involve a favourite gig, a funny story from the recording studio, a moment that led to the inspiration for a song, the fond recollection of a defunct venue, or the piece of music or lyric that they are most proud of creating.

Today we caught up with local jazz singer Coco Favre. Coco was born and raised in Switzerland where she started off as a dancer at the age of 9 and became lead singer of her first band by the age of 13. Coco has worked as a session singer in Geneva, Switzerland and New Zealand & featured in numerous bands all over the world, including local groups The David Feehan Band & covers band Mocha Choco Latte. Multi-linguistic, Coco not only speaks French, Spanish, German and English but she also sings in those languages.

My fondest memory of making music in Wellington are definitely my live gigs with the wonderful talent we have in our little Capital. I have collaborated with so many different musicians and enjoy the open minded Wellington crowds always eager to discover new music. For my funniest memory, however, nothing beats the recording of my jazz album 2 years ago where we recorded my vocals in the producers wardrobe (literally!) There I was between coats and shoes, singing into two foam mattresses covering the tiny space that was my singing booth for 2 days, It was so hard to be serious, I will never forget all the laughs, it was so much fun!

Without a doubt my favourite local songwriter/singer is AJ Crawshaw who I met over 7 years ago and have seen grow into a very fine artist. My favourite song of his is called Always.

You can follow Coco on Facebook, and buy her CD ‘Introducing… Coco Favre’ via her website or CD Baby.
