The Princess Diaries
Meg Cabot
Theme :Friendship, Love, Peer Pressure, Responsibility, Trust.
Score : 5 stars
Recommend : This is a humorous story about 14-year-old Mia, an ordinary teenage girl who finds out she is a princess. Her life suddenly turns upside down as she has to accept her new responsibility.
This is a really funny book, I would highly recommend it. I couldn't put it down! It is even better than the movie, which is also worth seeing. It tells the same story in a more mature way.
Meg Cabot showed her writing skills by placing a normal girl into scenes where she didn't belong and still made it easy to relate to. Mia was a really good character because if it had been another girl who knew how to act at dinner parties the story would have been boring.
I strongly recommend this book if you just want a laugh and a bit of fun!
Character : Mia, she is so hilarious and just takes everything to the extreme! I loved how Meg Cabot captured her character, you actually feel like you are in her situation (which isn't always a good thing)!
Scene : It was so funny that I don't even have a favourite scene, but I really liked it when Mia first found out she was a princess. Everything suddenly changed, there was no warning at all for Mia and I loved the way she reacted to it.

Cirque du freak /The Saga of Darren Shan Book 1
Darren Shan
Theme :Vampires.
Score : 5 stars
Recommend : I would recommend this book because it has a great subject and storyline.
Character : My favourite character is Darren Shan (the main character). He becomes a vampire's assistant to save his friend's life and explains the problems that arise from the consequences of his actions.
Scene : My favourite scene would have to be the one where Darren is describing the freak show where he mets the vampire. The freaks and their performances are really interesting and well described.

Billy Elliot
Melvin Burgess
Theme : Following your dreams.
Score : 3 stars
Recommend : It is an interesting book to compare to the movie. It shows a number of different perspectives. However, it is not as enjoyable or touching as the movie.
Favourite Character : Billy, because he is prepared to go against traditions and overcome any obstacles to achieve his dream of being a professional ballet dancer.
Favourite Scene : As Billy is leaving on the bus for London and his brother Tony shouts after him that he'll miss him. This is my favourite scene because it shows how even Tony, a stereotypical macho miner, can change and grow to love and to appreciate beautiful things.

Stanley Yelnats' Survival Guide to Camp Green Lake
Louis Sachar
Theme : The subject of the book is - surprise surprise - surving Camp Green Lake. A very humourous book based on the best-selling novel 'Holes'.
Score : 4 stars
Recommend : I would recommend it, especially to people who have read and enjoyed Holes because the style is similar and it is great to hear more about our favourite D-Tent boys!
Character : Well, except for Stanley, who's narrating, the characters are just touched over as the reader would normally already know them. Out of everyone mentioned though my favourite chracter would have to be Zero because he didn't just talk for the sake of talking.
Scene : Survial Test 2 which involves picking what you would do if, to your horror, you realise that there is a hole in your canteen and your water has been leaking out. The answer, drink the remaining water then smash your canteen. The Warden knows you cannot dig holes without water. You will be given a new canteen.

Dear Miffy
John Marsden
Theme : About a teenage boy writing lesson to his girlfriend, talking about how they met and their relationship when it ended and afterwards.
Score : 4 stars
Recommend : I wouldn't recommend this book beacause there is heaps of swearing that at times be quite offensive.
Character : There is only really one character and his name is Tony and he's the one who does all the swearing and stuff, so in this book I would have to say I don't have a favourite character.
Scene : My favourite part was finding out how they met because they started out hating each other until their relationship grew stronger and they realised they could trust each other.

Love, Hate and My Best Mate
Various
Theme : Love, hate, friendship Score : 4 stars
Recommend : This is a funny and yet serious collection of poems about three very important things. I liked this book, as it had an emphasis on teenagers. A good read for filling up short spaces of time.
Character : In the anthology, there are a lot of cool poems. There aren't really many characters though.
Scene : I really like a certain technique called a twist. It's when the poet makes the story funny at the end - lots of poets use this great technique.

My Sister's Keeper
Jodi Picoult
Theme : The family of a cancer patient, who had a daughter that was a perfect genetic match to the cancer patient. It deals with ethics, morals, and family.
Score : 5 stars
Recommend : I would recommend it because it a very quick read, that will have you hooked nearly instantly, and keeps you wondering until the very last page.
