From the Two Rivers
Robert Jordan
Theme :Fantasy. The first in an epic adventure saga.
Score : 3 stars
Recommend : The perfect book for any fantasy reader. While it starts off quite slow I found my interest increasing exponentially to the point where it was virtually unputdownable. By no means a small book, I was still amazed by the sheer volume of original creations combined with effective fantasy staples that Robert Jordan succeeded in incorporating into his text.
Character : Rand Al'Thor. I found Rand interesting simply because of the great changes present in his character.
Scene : Enthralled by the fantastical promises of the blurb, I began this book with thoughts of epic battles and mysterious beasts. As you may imagine, the rural normality surrounding the two rivers was something of a let down. Nevertheless, I persisted and it was the scene at Rand's house when the trollocs first attack that revitalised my interest. It was a sudden downpour after a long drought and stuck in my memory as the beginning of the book 'proper'.

Noughts and Crosses
Malorie Blackman
Theme : Racism, Romance, Drama, Alternate Universe.
Score : 4 stars
Recommend : It was a look at what the world would be like if Black people ruled over Whites, which I thought was a very interesting topic. It was really realistic, exept reversed, and had a great plot. The actual writing wasn't the best but the storyline made me not want to stop reading!
Character : Callum. He was really caring and had a nice personality even though he tried to hide it towards the end. He had suffered so much grief in his life that he didn't deserve what happened to him.
Scene : The end. I hated it yet it was so beautifully written and made me cry.

Hang a Thousand Trees With Ribbons
Ann Rinaldi
Theme : The life of a slave, in this case Phillis Wheatley, is very demanding, and it is tough, to break out of that cycle.
Score : 3 stars
Recommend : I would because this book is set in 1761, and would be interesting for readers to imagine this story being set in this time. Also, the life of an African-American woman is unknown to most, and this, although fiction could open the readers minds to the life of a slave.
Character : My favourite character was Phillis, and I admired her for her attitude about herself and towards others around her as well.
Scene : My favourite scene was when Nathaniel had encouraged Phillis in the Fall of 1767, and believed in her ability to write poems.

Tamora Pierce
Theme : Staying true to your beliefs.
Score : 4 stars
Recommend : I would recommend it because it is a very detailed book. It is possible to read it a number of times and still find interesting every time.
Character : Lalasa, because although she has been mistreated in the past, she is willing to work hard. Lalasa overcomes her greatest fears and achieves what she originally believed impossible.
Scene : On the day of the little examinations, Kel asks Neal whether he regrets choosing knighthood over becoming a healer. Neal responds, "And I wouldn't give up your friendship for all the healer's credentials in the world." I think this sums up the odd but great friendship Kel and Neal have developed.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Ken Kesey
Theme : This book is set in a mental institution in America in the 1960s. The main subject is insanity. The main theme is the emotional castration of men by women and sacrifice.
Score : 5 stars
Recommend : I would recommend it because the author, Ken Kesey, uses interesting language techniques and it is narrated in a stream of conciousness style by a mental patient, so it is up to the reader to distinguish what is real and what is not.
Character : Randel McMurphy as he rebels against ther hospital and is a complex character, he is humourous and interesting, he also makes the ultimate sacrifice in the end for the good of the patients.
Scene : The party scene near the end as it is emotive and suspenseful.

Evil Star
Anthony Horowtiz
Theme : A boy who has magic powers and has to save the world from monsters!
Score : 4 stars
Recommend : It has a different plot to usual 'magic' stories and it has a young boy (Matt) in it whose point of view and adventures are interesting and enthralling to read.
Character : My favourite character was Richard because I like the way he stands by his friend Matt and wants to be there for him no matter what.
Scene : My favourite scenes are Matt's dreams because I thinks it's really interesting that he can communicate with others in his dreams and the things that happen in his dreams are really weird and makes you want to know why they are happening.

Much Ado About Nothing (DVD)
Theme : Love and mixed messages.
Score : 3 stars
Recommend : I would recommend it ONLY if you've read the original Shakespeare play as although the cast was good, the story wasnt all that enthralling.
Character : Beatrix was my favourite character as she was not only witty but also knew exactly how to speak her mind about anything - no matter how out of place her comment may have been.
Scene : The end wedding scene was my favourite as it was a perfect happy ending - a wedding, an engagement and all-round merriment.
