Interview with MC Kyla
MC Kyla, is one third of GND the Wellington Hip Hop group, she's been MCing and performing with local musicians for around about 3 years. All photos are courtesy of her.
Did you (GND) perform up at the hip hop summit?
Yeah, we did a set up there, good times.
How did you get involved in GND?
I started out MCing drum and bass about 3 years ago, I met a guy who was doing some really good stuff with drum and bass and jungle. I learnt heaps off being around a really good dj, and I started performing with him. I knew the GND boys as friends and one day they saw me rhyming. They asked me to step up next time they were playing, then again the next time they played and so it went on till I asked "Am I in this band?" And I joined up.
What's up with GND?
We're recording for an album early next year, the first big release.
And what's up with you?
I just recorded a track with Confuscious and Mysterious D, it's quite singy, which seems to be creating a bit of excitement in Wellington. Also always working on my own stuff, rhyming.
What would you say to a young person wanting to get involved in MCing?
I'd say write down all your rhymes, that's massively important. Get a special book for rhyming, with blank pages. Listen to all types of music, not just music you want to perform. Write down everything, and be professional, practice and remember your first performances might not be your best, but you need them.
Any last words of advice to prospective MC's out there?
Stay true, don't be afraid. You'll meet some great people and have a good time, and that's what it's all about.
