 The
Avengers - The Morgan Conquest(Written by Kurt Busiek, Pencilled by George Perez) Collecting the first four issues of the current (third) volume of the Avengers comic book series, the main point of the storyline was putting together a new team of Avengers. Why'd they need a new team? Well, after the Onslaught storyline (1, 2, 3) some of the Marvel superheroes were transported to an alternate universe, which resulted in the Heroes Reborn series of comics (Avengers, Captain America, and Iron Man) which ran for 12 months. While these heroes were away Black Widow (who had assumed leadership of the normal universe's Avengers) disbanded the team (so Marvel didn't have to publish two monthly Avengers comics), which leads us to them needing to reform. The story begins with everybody who had ever been an Avenger being attacked by Asgardian creatures. Then Thor (who up to that point had been the only hero not to have returned from the alternate universe) appeared at the Avengers Mansion (where a few of the founding members were discussing the attacks) warning them that what was transpiring may mean the end of everything. The founding members then call on everyone who was attacked to gather at the mansion, where Thor explains that the Twilight Sword, which has the power to remake creation, has gone missing. Whoever has the sword also has the Mystic Norn Stones, which Thor can sense, so the assemblage is split into five groups to search for the stones. Four of the groups come upon nothing but monsters, but one of the groups is confronted by Morgan Le Fay, who lured them to her with the intent to capture the Scarlet Witch, which she succeeds in doing. She then combines the Scarlet Witch's power with that of the Twilight Sword and creates a reality where society and technology have not advanced since medieval times, and in which she rules all. So the Avengers need to break Morgan's spell over them, save the Scarlet Witch, defeat Morgan, and return to their own reality. How do they do it? You'll have to read it to find out. | ||
