English as a Second Language
for Students and Teachers
ESOL Collections
English as a Second Language books, cassettes and videos are available at Central Library, Johnsonville, Karori, Kilbirnie and Newtown.
If you prefer to use another branch or would like items couriered to you, reserve the items you want via our catalogue, or ask a staff member to help you.
At Central Library there are three areas for ESOL material:
- Books with numbers such as 420.7 and 428.24 are located in the language section at the harbour side of the North end (Harris Street) of the 1st Floor.
- Audio-visual material (cassettes, videos and kits) with numbers such as 428.24 is held in the language section of the Sound and Vision Centre, Victoria Street side, North end of the Ground floor.
- Material which says "(A Learn)" on the catalogue is held in the Adult Learning Collection, which is located on the Ground Floor next to the escalators. This collection offers fiction and non-fiction books, cassettes and videos, divided into three levels of ability.
ESOL material is very popular and often what you want will be on loan. You can reserve it via the catalogue. Please ask staff to show you where recently returned items are held on the 'Returned Today' stands and trollies.
Joining the Library
Anyone can use our resources in the library, but if you want to take items home or to school, you have to become a Wellington City Libraries member. It is free for Wellington residents! An useful catalogue search option is a Subject Browse for English language - study and teaching - foreign speakers. Click on the subject headings that look useful and you will see what material the library has on the subject.
A Keyword search using ESOL, IELTS, or TOEFL is another quick option.
