Searching the catalogue:

  • If you know the item you are after, you can do a title or author search.
  • If you aren't after a particular item, select Subjects as the Search Type. Enter the word 'design' plus your area of interest e.g. design skateboards.
  • If this search produces too few results, repeat the search but leave out the word 'design' OR choose the Search Type Keyword and enter the same words.
  • Try alternative words or broader terms than the exact topic needed, e.g. decoration instead of design, theater instead of stage, entertainment instead of theater.
  • Truncate search terms with an asterisk if you are unsure of the correct spelling or to broaden a search, e.g. design* will search for design, designers, designs etc., theat* will search for theater, theatre, theatrical etc.

Magazines

Most Design magazines are held on the 1st Floor of the Central Library, on both sides of the main stairwell.
Branch libraries hold a smaller selection of general interest titles.
Check the catalogue to see if the Library has a particular magazine title.

Design magazines held at WCL include:

ID : International Design
Prodesign
CMYK
Urbis

Architecture
Visual merchandising and store design
Graphis
Hauser

We hold long runs (sometimes incomplete) of many design magazines, such as Graphis (from 1968) and Vogue French (from 1949); check the catalogue to see if we have the dates you want. If you are interested in general magazine design or advertising, we have back issues of periodicals such as Time (from 1936) and National Geographic (from 1923).

Art and design periodicals are not well indexed. If you are after an article on a specific subject, check the catalogue to see if the magazine is indexed, try our online resources including Art Index CD-ROM, or ask at Art Music & Literature Enquiries if there are relevant paper indexes available.
