Authors are bloggers too

So you kind of like this author, right, and you want to, you know, get to know them a bit better…

Some writers have surprisingly good websites and blogs (and some have sites with flashy buttons and bright colours from the nineties…), and reading them can give you a good insight into their writing and what they’re up to and all that.

Here are some good examples:

book coverStephenie Meyer’s site has got lots of info (if you can see past the Arial font) and a countdown to the publication of Breaking Dawn (65 days, 9 hours, 27 minutes and 7 seconds when I last checked).

You can buy Scott Westerfeld-ish T-shirts from scottwesterfeld.com. Plus he calls his blog Westerblog, which I kind of like… and the header image is great.

E. Lockhart (who wrote The Boyfriend List and The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks) has a blog that she updates daily, and sticks photos on. It’s quite chatty and, well, blog-like.

book coverNeil Gaiman’s blog is great. He is a very clever man, plus there’s a link to a teaser for the Coraline movie, which is out some time soon.

Robert Muchamore (CHERUB Campus)- there’s a helicopter that flies across the top of the header. Cool. Also, join CHERUB and you also get monthly newletters and… missions!

I tried to look at Darren Shan’s site, but got a message about bandwidth. I’m sure that means it’s really flash (no pun intended).

And finally there’s *another* countdown at alagaesia.comChristopher Paolini’s counting the days until Brisingr (3 months, 22 days, 9 hours and 48 seconds, I saw).

There you are.

Little bow … wow

We’re all familiar with cute animals, and especially cute animals saying funny things. But sometimes we tire of cuteness (well, not really), and need to look at really ugly dogs. And vote for the ugliest! It’s not often that an opportunity like this presents itself. (My vote went for Pee Wee Martini.)

The quick brown fox

TypeRacer is a Flash game in which you race a car against others. Your typing speed determines the speed of your car. My measley 50 words per minutes seems to let me lead most races (though the current champion can type 219 wpm).

Not only is this game fun, it also qualifies as typing practice.

The ‘Everywhere Girl’

I must admit that I have a bit of a thing against stock photography, particularly in shopping centres: perfect-looking models with perfect white-toothed smiles, holding iPods, showing off shoes, posing in jeans, eating exotic looking foods, flirting with other exceptionally good-looking people; these images just don’t seem representative of the people who are doing the actual consuming! It feels fake. But love it or loathe it, stock photography plays an important role in everyday image exchange. Stock photography is found pretty much everywhere in the media: on book covers, advertising posters, websites and magazines…

Now just imagine if a photo shoot turned you into one of the most used stock-photo faces in the world. This happened to Jennifer Anderson. She’s no celebrity musician or movie star, but her stock-shot face features in numerous advertisments, on countless book covers and various websites. Anderson has gained a cult internet following and has her own blog and online store at www.theeverywheregirl.com .

What are some of the stock photos or images that seem to be everywhere? Let’s “take stock” of them (groan, bad pun alert!). Comment back with the web addresses, advertisments, or book covers that feature the image, or a variation thereof. You’ll need to have seen the image in two or more places for it to qualify.

A virtual world

Otago Museum’s SciCity is an interactive website that is laden with games. What’s notable is that you can create your own avatar, earn SciCity dollars that you can spend on technology, and chat with other users! It’s pretty addictive, but in the good, educational way. Otago Museum also produces the Cosmix Comic books, which are all online. We often have free copies in the library as well.

Flash

It is raining outside. Here are some nifty online games for you to play while you browse educational websites and sip hot chocolate.

Trashionista

For those of you who enjoy chick lit, beach reads and bestsellers, Trashionista is an awesome website that “gets to grips with the wonderful world of female fiction.”  It’s one of my favourite blogs because of its lovely layout and thorough content – as well as book reviews the site offers movie news, and interviews with popular female authors.  For girls who are passionate about reading (or writing) female fiction, Trashionista is an essential blog to check out.

Top 5 Music Websites

Music guru Jack has compiled a list of his five favourite music websites. Perfect for a rainy weekend!

  1. allmusic.com – This site is huge and does pretty much what its name would suggest. It covers all music from nu-rave to classical, hip hop to country. You can search by artist, album or song title and find bios, reviews, audio and more. Each artists page has links to artists that influenced them, similar artists, their genre(s),and more. It’s a great place to stop by to check out reviews and find out about older bands/performers. There are even blogs and newly released albums on the front page to keep you totally up to date. The most comprehensive music site on the internet.
  2. lastfm.com – Do you love a particular band and wish you could find more in a similar vein, but find it difficult? Try lastfm. I only came across this one recently, but it’s been a great find. Type in an artists name and you get streaming audio of them and similar artists along with bios. It’s a great way to discover new bands you haven’t heard before and try them out, along with reading the user reviews. This site also works as a great customisable online radio station, type in something you like and away it goes providing great background noise for parties, studying etc.
  3. pitchforkmedia.com – Want something a little more under the radar, a little more obscure and underground? Then it’s on pitchforkmedia. Easily the most music-snobbish site on the list, you can learn what’s hip right now and then make fun of your friends for being behind the times when they discover it 6 months later. They won’t like you anymore, but you’ll feel a sense of superiority. Or you can just enjoy the comprehensive review section and keep up to date with the lastest news in the alternative scene along with links to video and audio.
  4. ilike.com – With ilike you can buy and download new mp3s the legal way. Yay! And you can get exclusive free tracks too as a bonus. A lot of bands signed up with ilike will send you notifications of upcoming release dates and tours and you can also get these via your facebook profile. ilike will also see what bands you’re into and offer you suggestions of what else you could try out. Also on the site is the ilike music quiz which surely must be the most enjoyable time waster ever invented for music lovers.
  5. nzmusic.com – This sort of works like a wikipedia for New Zealand music that you can use to get all the latest news and check out what’s happening in your local area. There are also forums to chat to/argue with other music fans around the country. A good site to keep in mind with New Zealand Music Month just around the corner.

Sweet Valley High Strikes Back

The Sweet Valley High series is to be reprinted and – since it originally came out in the 80s – it will be updated to reflect changes in things like technology and fashion. So instead of the girls writing diaries, phoning one another and wearing pastel leg-warmers, they will write blogs, IM and text, and wear footless tights.

(We still have many of the original SVH books in the library, if you’re keen.)

Top 5 Sport Websites

Sporting expert, Jack, has compiled a Top 10 5 list of sport websites. If you can add any, leave a comment!

  1. cricinfo.com – All the goings-on in the world of cricket. Includes all the latest results, news, blogs, opinions and the most comprehensive archived statistics section I’ve ever seen. It even has a games section packed full of fun flash based mini-games to try. If cricket is your sport, then this should be your homepage!
  2. www.stuff.co.nz/sport – Everything you need to get up to speed on what’s happening in New Zealand and international sport. From Rugby to Running, Bowls to Basketball, it’s all covered here with articles from national newspapers, opinion pieces, videos and blogs.
  3. espn.com – If you follow any of the major American sports (Football, Basketball, Baseball, Ice Hockey, Nascar etc.) or just want an American perspective on the world of sport then this should be your first port of call. The site includes all the latest news, results, statistics and opinions, but that is just scratching the surface. There are also podcasts by leading sports journalists and highlights videos sourced from the ESPN network. There certainly are a lot of options here!
  4. allblacks.com – Rugby is New Zealand’s national sport and this is the website for our national team. Keep up to date with the Tri-Nations, Super 14 and Air New Zealand cup competitions with all the latest news, results and fixtures. Also download desktop wallpapers and watch videos all while pretending the 2007 World Cup never happened!
  5. motorsport.com – Whether you enjoy cars going around in circles very quickly (Nascar, Indycar), cars flying through snow and mud very quickly (World Rally Championship), motorbikes going around in circles very quickly (superbikes) or some other sort of really fast motorised vehicle (F1, drag-racing) it’s almost certainly on here. Keeping up to date on the fast (haha!) world of motorsport is made easy with motorsport.com’s sheer amount of up to the minute news and results. Other more specialised sites may go deeper, but none have a scope quite this wide.

Warhammer time.

The Warhammer Online Collector’s Edition has been announced; this will mean very little to anyone who doesn’t know what Warhammer Online will be. But for those in the know, good news! It will be packed with books, in-game extras and a graphic novel.

Cute things (b^_^)b

The Cute Book, by Aranzi Aronzo, is full of very cool – and very cute – felt critters and instructions on how to make them. So cute! You are never to old to enjoy cute things.

Do you like Shaun Tan?

We really like Shaun Tan. His stories – some for children, and some for teens – are about topics other people might not think to write about and his illustrations are amazing. He’s got a great website as well. Visit his website to see more of his illustrations, read about the stories behind his stories and find out what else he’s been doing recently. Plus there are pictures of a truly awesome mural he’s painted in some lucky Australian library …

Spinebreakers

Spinebreakers is an online book review site run by Penguin books. Check it out: there’s heaps of reviews and interviews, plus if you’re really keen (and you write quality reviews) you could become a contributing editor…
