Top 10: Prom!

Or more accurately it’s a Top Ten Eight. Just in time for ball season which sort of starts next month, here are some choice pieces of fiction that might make you think twice about taking your school ball for granted. Here there are horror stories (actual horror and acute-embarrassment type horror), fairy tale type stories, coming of age stories, funny stories, getting one up on your nemesis stories and so much more.

  1. Prom Dates from Hell, Rosemary Clement-Moore. Tom, who buys YA books, says this is good.
  2. Prom Nights from Hell. A short story collection with some well-known contributors (Meg Cabot, Lauren Myracle, Stephenie Meyer etc).
  3. Prom, Laurie Halse Anderson. A cynic saves the day.
  4. 24 girls in 7 days, Alex Bradley. Sometimes you wait 35 minutes for a bus… and then 6 show up at once. Not that prom dates are buses, but that seems to be the general gist. People like this book: it’s witty.
  5. Two parties one tux and a very short film about The Grapes of Wrath, Steven Goldman. If you have to choose between the white tux and the lime one, pick lime.
  6. Fat Hoochie Prom Queen, Nico Medina. Who’s going to be prom queen; a stuck up television star or Madge, big and bold? The reviews suggest that the ending might be too happy, but you decide.
  7. 21 Proms, edited by David Levithan and Daniel Ehrenhaft. Again, a collection that includes offerings from such wonders as John Green, E Lockhart, Cecily von Ziegesar, Libba Bray and Brent Hartinger. Writing short stories about proms is definitely the thing to do.
  8. A Really Nice Prom Mess, Brian Sloan. Disguises, on-stage performances, car chases and coming out.
