When it came time to choose our books, there was a twist.  They had been wrapped up so that the covers were hidden and we were only told a little bit about them.  This was to help us learn not to judge a book by it’s cover and it was a surprise to see what book we had chosen.  Our meeting ended on a high note with two of our BookBusters receiving certificates for attending 6 meetings – well done to Amelia and Samantha.

Get down to your local library during the first week of October for your chance to meet some of New Zealand’s best children’s authors! Snuggle up and listen to them reading some of their favourite stories, play some cool writing games and activities and find out all about how to write and be an author.

We had 10 BookBusters for our September meeting, and had one new member. We started our session with a puzzle followed by a relay game.

Some BookBusters shared reviews and were enthusiastic. New books were presented to them which they enjoyed and we ended with a humorous story.

It was enjoyable although it was a very wet day!

Tess really enjoyed a BookBuster favourite, Bunnicula by Deborah Howe.

Jonathan is reading the Spy Dog series by Andrew Cope, and is up to the part where Spy Dog has puppies!

Naomi liked Valley of Adventure by Enid Blyton.

And Rachel did a great review of the classic book  Comet in Moominland by Tove Jansson.

Everyone listened really well to the book reviews- good work!

Then, to celebrate the arrival of spring, we had an end-of-winter story time session. It was the perfect afternoon for it, with wind and rain buffeting the library. First of all, we spread cushions and blankets out on the floor so that everyone could get comfy. Then, we turned out the lights and listened to stories by torchlight with mugs of hot chocolate and marshmallows!

First, Anna read a tale by Jack Lasenby. Then she read Jim: who ran away from his nurse and was eaten by a lion by Hilaire Belloc. This is a classic cautionary tale for naughty children! To finish, Rowan read Horrid Henry’s Underpants by Francesca Simon, which got lots of laughs.

We also learned how to write book reviews.

We also enjoyed playing memory games; in general we had great time.

In which a group of year 6 boys head off to have the time of their lives at camp, only to have the school’s cruellest teacher come with them. But even “The Bomb” can’t stop the practical jokes, and other hilarious misadventures in this true blue aussie tale.

The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton

In which Joe, Beth, and Frannie introduce their cousin Rick to their many magical  friends who live in the enormous tree, they have plenty of adventures together and eat lots of delicious food.

The Complete Peanuts by Charles Shultz

In which you get to hang out with Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Schroeder, Lucy & Linus and the rest of the gang for 313 pages. Don’t be put off by that number of pages, seriously,  you can read that many comic strips!

Captain Underpants and the invasion of the incredibly naughty cafeteria ladies from outer space (and the subsequent assault of the equally evil lunchroom zombie nerds) : the third epic novel by by Dav Pilkey
In which Harold, George, and Captain Underpants use Wedgie Power to save the universe from the evil aliens, disguised as dinner ladies. Actually I got all that from our catalogue, because this is a book that no grown up would ever read. Which is maybe why you should?:-)
