As we were looking at Non Fiction, our quiz was about the weirdest animals in the world. There are some really ugly things out there in our jungles and seas! My personal fave was the Blob Fish.
Megan handed in her completed Zine for the Storylines Festival – really impressive and wellmade. Some of the other members are completing theirs at home and, once finished, will hand them over for display. Thanks to those who decided to have a go at making Zines.
We had some great reviews of NZ fiction (see below for some), chose our Non fiction books for next month and decided on Science for September. 
Jasper Ludlow has been left behind! First his parents left him in the charge of his uncle Trump and now his uncle has gone too. Luckily the Travelling Restaurant is tied up at the wharf and Jasper is able to go onboard to hide from the Provisional Monarch’s troops. And so begins his quest to find his parents and little sister Sibilla. He is helped by Dr Rocket and Polly who run the restaurant and along the way he meets pirates, learns to cook, rescues Beatrix from Lady Gall (the Provisional Monarch trying to make herself queen) and learns a lot about the royal family and his own destiny. Good NZ fiction
A sample of the many amazing New Zealanders who have achieved fame in their lifetime. This anthology covers sporting greats such as Sir Colin Meads, Scott Dixon and Barbara Kendall; Artists, including Sir Peter Jackson, Rhys Darby and Margaret Mahy; Adventurers Sir Edmund Hillary and Jean Batten; Scientists Ingrid Visser and Sir William Pickering; and many more. This book has concise stories of their lives and accomplishments, with some very funny anecdotes. There are great illustrations by cartoonist Bruce Potter who draws outlandish caricatures for us to laugh at.
Had a great time on Thursday at August’s meeting. First they reviewed the Comics and Graphic novels they had been reading. Then they were introduced to books that had been turned into movies.
The BookSeekers did some fun movie quizzes: First, they had to guess the right Book of the Movie from the clue given. Second, they had to guess which film a movie quote came from.
Then Jenny read to the BookSeekers a few pages from Zathura a book that has been made into a movie. And Jenny spoke to the BookSeekers about their new project which they will be doing each session: creating a zine (a mini magazine) with a page for each genre, starting in August and going until the end of the year.
Finally, the BookSeekers finished the session with a fun game of Pictionary, where Susannah gave them film and book titles that they had to draw on the whiteboard and other kids had to guess! The BookSeekers had a blast!
We had a great time on Wednesday, reviewing mystery books, and then being introduced to science books.
First the BookSeekers did a quiz on science, then Susannah and Bridget read to them some disgusting and surprising science facts. Then they had to compete in Bridget’s science challenge: seeing how quickly they could read out a list of colours which were printed in different colours to the words. The word red was coloured blue!
Finally, the BookSeekers were asked to make a zine by creating a collage on paper. The BookSeekers had started making zines at July’s BookSeeker meeting. One BookSeeker, Jessica, brought along a zine of poetry she had written herself. A spectacular effort by Jessica. The BookSeekers are making zines for the Storylines Festival, which will be held at the Wellington Town Hall, and at Capital E, on Sunday 21st August. It is free for families to attend on the 21st.

BookSeekers is a monthly club for 9-12 year olds. It’s free and fun – just turn up!
We had a great little group this month and like our BookBuster buddies we looked at zines. These are little paper booklets usually written in computer-printed or handwritten text that have been photocopied and stapled together. They can be about any subject that interests you!
We started to make some of our own and there were some great ideas, like poems, stories and cartoons. We’re looking forward to working on these some more at our next meeting. Here’s a handy link with lots of tips and ideas: Zine-Making for Kids so you can give it a go too.
We also reviewed the graphic novels that we took home last month and had fun reading. This is not a genre that many of us read and we were surprised at what we found. There are lots more out there than just the Superman or Spiderman comics. Click on the book covers to see some of the ones we enjoyed.
Our theme for July was graphic novels.
This month we tried a different spin on this theme by acting out a graphic novel. We got into three different groups and after a short practice performed a short graphic novel drama.
I have to say we have some budding actors and actresses in the making. Peter Jackson might be knocking on their doors.
We also started creating our own Zines, you will be able to read them at the Storylines festival on Sunday 21st August.
We had a great time as we looked at our theme for the month – mystery stories.
We had some great BookSeeker detectives who were able to solve the crime of the ‘Snack Shack’ as well as decode secret messages using a special code cracker. So look out, there might be a secret message coming your way soon.
