Mr Miniscule and the Whale – Special book launch

Attention all book and craft lovers! Book Island are launching their latest book Mr Miniscule and the Whale at the Wellington Central Library – and you’re all invited!

Written by Julian Tuwim and illustrated by Bohdan Butenko, this picture book is considered a classic in Poland where it has been read and enjoyed by many generations.

The first edition of the book was published in 1939, which is exactly 75 years ago, while the illustrations of this new edition were added in 1956. The author, Julian Tuwim (1894 – 1953), was one of Poland’s leading poets. He won fame not just for his adult verse but also for his rhymes for children, many of which are classics known to every Polish child and adult.

Bohdan Butenko, the illustrator, has produced illustrations for more than 200 children’s books. Now at the age of 83 he is still very active. Bohdan Butenko has won numerous awards, among them the 2012 Order of the Smile – a special medial awarded by children to adults who are particularly kind to them.

Book Island have translated the story into English (and Dutch too!) and will be celebrating it’s launch with a special event at Wellington Central Library on Mrach 18th at 3.30pm.

Come along to hear the story read in English, assisted by 7-year-old Edward Tait, who will recite some stanzas in Polish. Afterwards you and your friend and parents (grandparents can come too!) will be invited to try some delicious blackberry kompot (Polish cordial) and join the arts & crafts workshop organised by Craft Garden. This event has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Polish Ambassador in Wellington, Mrs. Beata Stoczyńska.
