This Morning I met a Whale

Childrens Bookshop coverMichael sees something strange in the water near his house one morning and goes to investigate. A whale! So far up the river?

Amazingly he can hear the whale speak to him and when he has listened to the whale’s story Michael says he will help. At school his story is read out to the whole class but no one believes him until the head teacher comes in to tell them a whale has been seen far up the river and everyone goes to see but Michael is the only one brave enough to get close and help.

A story with a conservation message for us all. Find this book in our catalogue.

New Tomi Ungerer editions

The library has some beautiful new editions of two classic Tomi Ungerer stories- Moon Man and The Three Robbers.

Moon Man is the story of how the man in the moon comes to Earth, only to experience the highs and lows of life on the green planet.

The Three Robbers accost people and steal their gold and jewels, until a young orphan called Tiffany makes them change their ways.

Ungerer’s unique illustration style and bold use of colour make the books a visual feast. I would recommend these stories for children aged 4-8.

Kia ora tamariki,

Kei te aha koutou i ngā rā hararei? What are you doing in the holidays?

How about exploring your local whare pukapuka? We have heaps of cool books, dvds, cds and magazines to keep you entertained.

Some great new books include:

Counting the stars by Gavin Bishop - four Māori myths (in English)

Te taniwha i warewaretia / The forgotten taniwha by Robin Kahukiwa ( in English and te reo Māori) – a picture book about the taniwha Ngākau Pono who has been looking after the people who live in the pā below his cave for hundreds of years. When the Pākehā arrive in Aotearoa the people start to leave – has Ngākau Pono been forgotten forever?

Rangitoto : te toka tu moana : the rock standing by Maria Gill - tells the story of Rangitoto island, it’s history and how it is being looked after today.

Ngā mihi o te Tau Hau ki a koutou katoa!

This book may appeal to girls who are interested in embroidery because it is a fun beginner’s book on embroidery. It has easy to follow instructions and list of tools required for the projects along with discussions about what colours to use. All the basic stitches are illustrated and explained clearly. It even has cool templates to use. So if you’re running out of ideas for gifts this Christmas, then this book might be particularly helpful for you if you are into embroidery or handmade gifts. Its title is Embroidery for Little Miss Crafty: projects and patterns to create and embellish, by Helen Dardik.
