The Chicken Thief by Beatrice Rodriguez was first published in France but has been published in New Zealand by Gecko Press. Actually, not much translation was needed, as it is a wordless picture book that all ages will enjoy. The story tells what happens when a fox steals a chicken and the chase that follows. Borrow a copy, it will have you smiling. Very cute.

Cool new fiction in the library

There’s some cool new stuff that’s recently arrived at the library. There’s the second Softwire adventure by P.J. Haarsma, called Betrayal on Orbis 2, which looks action packed. 100% Hero is the follow up to the really popular 100% Wolf, which was a Kids’ Choice selection. Freddy’s dad has been caught and put into a zoo, people are snooping around the castle, then Freddy has to go to camp.

Also new is Hannah’s Secret, part of the Beautiful Game series by Narinder Dhami (about football). Find out what else is new on the My Library Children’s Fiction page.

Shakespeare’s Missing Years

In 1585 Shakespeare was living in Stratford-upon-Avon, and in 1592 he was working as a writer in London. What happened in the seven years in between? No one knows. This period in Shakespeare’s life is known as the “lost years” or “missing Years.”

There are several ideas as to what Shakespeare may have been up to in that time. Some of those ideas are: Shakespeare worked as an apprentice glove maker for his father; Shakespeare studied law; Shakespeare was a teacher; Shakespeare joined the army; Shakespeare went on a voyage exploring the ocean; Shakespeare travelled, perhaps to Italy. We may never know for certain.

To find out more about William Shakespeare, see the websites about  him linked from our Kids Catalogue.
