Rachel and Theo Matheson are a pair of red-haired twins from Nelson. They are staying at their cousin Ricky’s house in Auckland for the school holidays when they get embroiled in a struggle between two alien races over the fate of the Earth. Mr Jones is the goodie and the Wilberforce family are the villians. The Wilberforces are slimy slug-like creatures that can transform into humans for short periods of time. They want to take over the world and turn it into a planet of mud.

Can Rachel and Theo rescue the planet from the filth of alien imperialism…?

Under the Mountain is an exciting adventure set amongst the volcanoes and waterways of Auckland city, and was written by the wonderful Mr Maurice Gee.

(By the way, we have also got the DVD of the 1980s TV series in the Young Adult section.)

Roses are red, violets are blue…

I just had to share these with somebody, cause I had great fun reciting them or saving them up for special ocassions… yeah right! The famous “rose are red, violets are blue” poem has been altered and twisted, and the results are amusing. Here goes…

Roses are red

Violets are blue,

I was born beautiful

What happened to you? (I THINK THIS IS A 10 ON THE MEAN SCALE)

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

When brains were given out

Where were you?  (I THINK THIS 9 ON THE MEAN SCALE)

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

The gasworks stink

And so do you. (When you’d want somebody to take a bath)

Roses are red,

Violets are blue

Orchids are expensive

Will dandelions do?

Roses are red

Violets are blue

I can row a boat

Canoe?

The roses have wilted,

The violets are dead,

Sugar is lumpy

And so is your head.

Finally….

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

Most rhymes rhyme,

But this doesn’t.

Josh is a worrier – and for a good reason. A brother or sister is about to be born, but his mother is in hospital with something called ‘complications’. As if that’s not bad enough, Grandma has arrived to run the household while Josh’s dad is busy with their chicken farm. And then there’s Semolina, Josh’s cantankerous and extraordinary pet hen. In return for prawn crackers and the odd beer she’ll tell Josh all the animal gossip. But no one else believes Semolina can talk, and Josh’s warning about a fox on the loose in the chicken house in laughed at – until it is too late.
