Living Library 2008

Living Library is taking place TODAY!

Bookings can only be made in person, at the Central Library (first floor), from 10am.

Browse our Living Library Catalogue.

What is a living Library?

Instead of borrowing a book, you can borrow a person for a 30-minute chat. The 'Books' are people you may not normally have the opportunity to talk to. Many of them may face negative stereotypes or prejudice within our community, and all of them have personal stories and experiences to share.

How does it work?

Come into the library as a 'Reader' and view the catalogue of 'Books' available on the day. There are different 'chapters' about the person's life that they are happy to be questioned about. Take a card for the 'Book' you wish to borrow and either talk to your 'Book' immediately or reserve a time to speak to them.

How can I be a reader?

Anyone can talk with a 'Book' to understand more about different people's life experiences and perhaps challenge some of your own assumptions. Be open, be kind and be yourself. Talk to your 'Book', ask questions, listen. This is a great opportunity to learn more about someone else who you might not normally meet.

Details

To find out what 'Books' will be on offer, check back here often. We will add details as they are confirmed, or phone 499 4444. Bookings can only be made on the day.

I feel freedom in the air – a Thai living in New Zealand

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Moving here from Thailand six years ago, this Book relishes the freedom to choose who and what she wants to be in New Zealand. Free from the cultural and social expectations of Thai culture, she enjoys being respected for who she is and the down to earth and ‘DIY’ approach we have to life. But along with connecting with her own inner strength she has also encountered depression and other challenges. Find out about her experiences and the different ways she is contributing to our community.

“I couldn’t believe that I could really do it – living here and making my own life!”

What is a ‘Living Library’ ?

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

What’s your story : nou te korero – library week 2008 ; 18-24 August is happening nationwide in New Zealand. Wellington City Libraries is taking part by organising a Living Library at Central, on Friday the 22nd of August, from 2pm till 6pm.

The concept of the Living Library started back in 2000 in Denmark and they are now very popular throughout Europe, and the UK. There are several articles online featuring these events such as The new library fad : borrow a person (TimesOnline), Take out your prejudice in the living library (Norden), and coverage of the Bradford (UK) event – Living by the book, and this TV report : ‘Living Library’ in Bradford.

Want to set up your own Living Library ?

Don’t judge a book by its cover : the library guide is a very complete document that we found helpful in organising our event. The Living Libraries website Living-library.org : take out your prejudice also provides a wealth of information – check it out today!
