Wellingtonians at the Library

As part of the Central Library’s 20th Anniversary celebrations several noteworthy Wellingtonians were filmed talking about their favourite books – how they’ve been influenced by them, how they discovered them etc. – amongst the shelves. Here is the complete “Wellingtonians at the Library” playlist, also viewable along with all of our other videos on our Youtube channel.

And, if you haven’t seen them yet, here is our photoset on Flickr taken during the celebrations.

Weaving at the Central Library

The Library is a welcoming place where people like to come and spend some time, not only for our books or magazines, but also to be part of community life. The Maori collection area on the second floor is a quiet, peaceful area and Weaver Sammy found this was the perfect place to spend a day creating some beautiful flax woven items. I caught a glimpse of him at the end of the day and was amazed to discover the high quality pieces he had produced since the morning.

Christchurch Bus Mission on its way

Thank you to everyone who donated toiletries, bedding, and non-perishable food for the Christchurch Bus mission.
As you can see with from the clip below, we’ve been lucky to have some students from Wellington College as well as some of our library staff members and members of the public to help loading the bus.
We were not able to fit it all in the bus, so we will be adding the remainder to a container that is going down later this week.

Ninety people or so piled in through the door to attend a New Zealand-themed ukulele story-time recently during NZ Music Month.  Marg, Odette, Ellie and Monty performed, read and improvised their way through 30 minutes of great fun!

A Race Relations Day celebration

2005 Amanda Golding launched the Earth people concept, a Wellington wide celebration for Race Relations day, at Newtown Library. This was supported by Desigin Thulkanam from the Human Rights Commission and Joris de Bres attended the event.

There was plenty of discussion while making the figurines about acceptance of people of all ethnicities, and how we may look different from one another but in essence we are all the same, needing food, water and family, we are one people!

Here is a slideshow of some wonderful clay figurines from Earth People events since 2005. Check out the list of participating libraries on our Earth People Event page and come and join us at an Earth People Event in 2009!
