Fashion prints are seen everywhere: on wallpaper, cushions, clothes and more. Our design selection this month includes two books about these: New fashion Print , and if you are a bit nostalgic and like vintage, you can also borrow 1960’s Fashion Print: a sourcebook. If you are a fan of US designer Narciso Rodriguez, you can read about his work, and you can also find out more about design packaging, including music graphics and design. You can also try out new and inventive ways of presenting your business cards and other RSVPs with 1,000 greetings: creative correspondence designed for all occasions. And if you want to know all about selling design successfully, check out this month’s Design Recent Picks.

Our first solar telescope viewing event as part of our celebrations for the International Year of Astronomy took place with Wellington Astronomical Society in Civic Square on Saturday. Using a special Hydrogen Alpha filter, viewers were able to see activity of the edge of the sun briefly in the morning and again later in the afternoon until the clouds rolled in and blocked the view. Although the sun didn’t shine for us all day that didn’t stop several hundred people from coming over to have a look and find out more.
If you missed out come along to our next astronomy event in Civic Square on the 4th and 5th April when Wellington Astronomical Society and Wellington City Libraries will be participating in the ‘100 Hours of Astronomy’. This international event aims to have 1 million people looking through a telescope over a 100 hour time period – come along to join in the fun and be one of them!

Not so long ago, the general belief was that the earth was flat and that the ocean was overflowing into nothingness. Atlantic Ocean : the illustrated history of the ocean that changed the world shows that this belief was proved wrong and that this ocean had a definitive impact on communications, trades and industries in the western world. Our selection this month includes an item about the friendship between two revolutionaries: Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, as well as a book about the Jewish resistance during the Second World War. A history of the enticing Babylon and the complex Iran, and an account of the 1966 Florence flood are presented also. And if you are interested in a photographic report of the American Civil War, a review of the military operations in Basra, and Cook’s explorations with HMB Endeavour, then check out this month’s History Recent Picks.
