Turn off your lights this Saturday and see the stars!
Between 8.30 and 9.30pm this Saturday 28 March, lights in Wellington and around New Zealand and the world will be turned off for Earth Hour, with the aim of raising awareness of the impact of climate change. It is also an important opportunity to realise the effect of light pollution and the impact it has on our ability to see the wonders of the night sky. Furthermore, recent reports such as this one from National Geographic show clear links to health risks and issues from lighting up the night – thanks to Terry G for sending this through.
So turn off your lights this Saturday and see how many stars you can find in the skies above where you live – and keep an eye out here throughout the year for further information about light pollution as we celebrate the International Year of Astronomy 2009.
