Solar Observing Day

Our first solar telescope viewing event as part of our celebrations for the International Year of Astronomy took place with Wellington Astronomical Society in Civic Square on Saturday.  Using a special Hydrogen Alpha filter, viewers were able to see activity of the edge of the sun briefly in the morning and again later in the afternoon until the clouds rolled in and blocked the view.   Although the sun didn’t shine for us all day that didn’t stop several hundred people from coming over to have a look and find out more.

If you missed out come along to our next astronomy event in Civic Square on the 4th and 5th April when Wellington Astronomical Society and Wellington City Libraries will be participating in the ‘100 Hours of Astronomy’.  This international event aims to have 1 million people looking through a telescope over a 100 hour time period – come along to join in the fun and be one of them!
