“We had a lovely week making earth people here at Paraparaumu library. It’s amazing how quiet a group of 12 year olds can get when when you give them a piece of clay.

In the New Yorker magazine of September 8th 2008, Alec Baldwin bemoans the fact that he is not Leonardo De Caprio.
“To be Leo!…To play the role that is the fizz in the drink, you know what I mean? You are the movie!”
The profile is full of that hyper, intense sense Baldwin has of himself. Baldwin is his own best role, and, as if to prove this to himself and to us he has resuscitated an almost terminally stalled career.
He’s released an inconsistently reviewed memoir, ‘A promise to ourselves,’ that promises, at the start of every chapter, to be fair, to his ex-wife, his daughter, the American judicial system, his lawyers (Baldwin is involved in one of the more protracted and prominent custody battles in Hollywood at the moment) and then proceeds to criticise each for extended periods. It’s entertaining in its own train-wreck way, like a sparkler throwing off malicious sparks.
Grammy winning TV series ‘30Rock,’ currently has Baldwin at its frenetic centre playing an egotistical CEO Everyman: management-plus, assertive to a fault and unfailingly funny.
‘I wish I could play the lead role in one movie, one great movie,’ Baldwin says in his New Yorker profile, ‘Why Me?’
Mickey Rourke suprised this year with a comeback so unexpected it seemed pure fiction.
Why not Alec Baldwin?

Attention has once again been drawn to the graphic novel genre with the recent movie release of Watchmen, written by Alan Moore, a series published between 1986-1987. This is the seventh graphic novel by Allan Moore to be produced as a movie. Others were, From Hell, published 1994, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, published between 1999-2007 and V for Vendetta , published between 1982-1989. Alan Moore, born in England in 1953, is one of the world’s most prolific graphic novelists, with publications too numerous to count. He has also published novels, poetry and short stories. His work has received many awards and much recognition. In 1988 Watchmen won a Hugo award in the category, Other Forms. This category was created for that year only and has not as yet been re-instated. In 2005 Watchmen was the only graphic novel included in Time Magazines “All-Time 100 Novels”
Other graphic novels to have been produced as movies include Sin City by Frank Miller, Iron Man by Stuart Moore, Punisher, based on John Constantine, Hellblazer graphic novel series, History of Violence by John Wagner and Batman: the dark knight returns by Frank Miller. All these movie titles are held by Wellington City Libraries.

Turn off your lights this Saturday and see the stars!
Between 8.30 and 9.30pm this Saturday 28 March, lights in Wellington and around New Zealand and the world will be turned off for Earth Hour, with the aim of raising awareness of the impact of climate change. It is also an important opportunity to realise the effect of light pollution and the impact it has on our ability to see the wonders of the night sky. Furthermore, recent reports such as this one from National Geographic show clear links to health risks and issues from lighting up the night – thanks to Terry G for sending this through.
So turn off your lights this Saturday and see how many stars you can find in the skies above where you live – and keep an eye out here throughout the year for further information about light pollution as we celebrate the International Year of Astronomy 2009.
